Chapter 8 - THE FATHER WHO NEVER DIED.
Claire’s father, Colonel James Mitchell, had supposedly died during a training exercise twelve years earlier.
The stock trust proved he had worked with Hale and Lawson Global to create the veteran employment partnership.
Daniel admitted their father believed corporate ownership would give military families permanent influence.
Instead, executives used the trust to claim veterans had approved every policy.
Claire looked at Hale.
“You used my father’s service to manufacture consent for people who never saw the contracts.”
Hale said James understood sacrifice.
Rosa replied, “Powerful men use that word when someone else loses the house.”
The trust contained enough stock to control Lawson Global if transferred to an elected veteran board.
Claire refused personal ownership.
“My last name does not make me more entitled than the applicants whose records were sold.”
The board froze the merger and placed the stock under court supervision.
Then Daniel opened a sealed letter from their father.
James had entered witness protection after discovering the data program.
