Ruby stayed beside Mara as the projection wall highlighted an unknown adult among the guests. Diane’s face turned toward the crowd before anyone else moved.
The Estate Attorney removed the audit cartridge and said, “A relative’s DNA was substituted to make Diane appear connected to Henry Ashford.”
Henry ordered the doors secured. No one was touched, but every VIP credential was frozen.
A silver-haired woman near the stage slowly removed her jeweled glove. Eleanor Ashford, Henry’s younger sister and chair of the family foundation, stepped forward.
“I authorized the sample,” she said. “The estate needed an adult heir, not a frightened orphan raised in foster care.”
Mara’s expression hardened.
“You decided wealth made fraud responsible and poverty made a child inconvenient.”
Eleanor claimed Ruby’s result could still be contaminated. The attorney disagreed. Ruby’s sealed sample had remained inside an independent chain of custody.
