Chapter 3 - THE MOTHER THEY PRICED OUT OF PARENTHOOD.
Henry said he had been told Claire threatened to sell information about the family.
Mara answered, “A wealthy accusation arrived in a leather folder. A poor mother arrived crying. You trusted the folder.”
Henry did not ask to be excused. He surrendered his estate vote pending review and ordered every guardianship file preserved.
Ruby remained beside her licensed advocate while the adults faced the consequences of documents she never chose.
The archived petition showed Claire’s income, housing and hospital debt were used as proof she could not provide stability. The Ashford Foundation offered to pay those debts only if she surrendered parental rights.
Eleanor called it compassionate placement.
The Estate Attorney replied, “Compassion does not require a mother to become legally invisible.”
Then Mara found Claire’s name in a gala payment ledger. The foundation had continued billing donors for Ruby’s care long after Mara became her foster guardian.
