Chapter 5 - THE MONEY MARA ACCEPTED.
Mara admitted receiving a foster-care supplement for Ruby’s housing, therapy and school needs.
“I believed it was public support routed through the foundation.”
The records showed only half reached Ruby. The remainder was withheld whenever Mara challenged visitation rules or requested Claire’s original files.
Rosa looked at her.
“You knew the payments changed when you asked questions.”
Mara did not hide behind good intentions.
“I knew they were pressuring me. I stayed because moving Ruby again felt worse. That choice also helped them keep control.”
She placed every payment under independent review and stepped away from managing Ruby’s inheritance case.
Diane smiled as if one compromised decision erased her fraud.
Ruby’s advocate answered, “Accountability is not a contest where the worst person makes everyone else innocent.”
The reader then opened the family audit cartridge. A second green line connected Ruby to someone standing inside the ballroom.
It did not point to Henry.
