Chapter 1 - The Plate That Missed Her Head by InchesThe dinner plate flew past Claire's head before Margaret could even finish lifting her wineglass.

Claire ducked.

White porcelain shattered against the dark polished floor behind her, scattering steak, vegetables, and fragments across a dining room where everything else had been arranged with the precision of a magazine photograph.

The centered crystal chandelier.

The white floral centerpiece.

The imported wine.

The cream chairs.

The four formal place settings.

And now one woman sitting frozen at the table while the man she married stood beside her with rage still burning in his face.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Arthur remained in the doorway, silver-haired and silent.

Neither moved.

That hurt almost as much as the plate.

Adrian had done it in front of them.

His mother.

His father.

Two people who had spent three years telling Claire that disagreements between husbands and wives should remain private.

Two people who criticized her voice when it grew too emotional, her clothes when they looked too inexpensive, and her family whenever their working-class lives became inconvenient to the Whitmore image.

Claire closed her eyes.

Her shoulders trembled.

Then she slowly opened them.

Tears formed, but she did not scream.

She had learned long ago what happened when women like her lost control in rooms owned by people like them.

They called you unstable.

Ungrateful.

Dramatic.

A social climber who could not handle the pressure of marrying above her station.

Claire looked directly at Adrian.

“You did this in front of everyone.”

Adrian stared back.

He had expected tears.

Perhaps an apology.

Maybe silence.

He had not expected calm.

Claire reached toward the structured brown leather handbag resting on the chair beside her.

Margaret finally spoke.

“Claire, let's not make this uglier than it already is.”

Claire's hand stopped.

There it was.

Not an apology.

Not concern.

A warning about appearances.

The plate was not the scandal.

Her reaction might be.

Claire reached into the bag and removed her dark green-black smartphone.

Adrian's rage disappeared.

For the first time that evening, he looked afraid.

“Who are you calling?”

Claire pressed the phone to her left ear.

Tears rolled down her cheek.

Then she said clearly:

“I need you to come now. They all saw what happened.”

Arthur's face suddenly lost all color.

Margaret turned toward him.

May you like

And Adrian finally noticed something terrifying.

His father already knew who was on the other end.
