Chapter 40 - THE MOTHER WHO RETURNED WITH THE TAPE.
Helen entered the Newark factory through a silent line of workers.
Claire had not seen her mother in eight years.
“You let me believe Dad protected me,” Claire said. “You let twelve families believe I remembered nothing.”
Helen held the tape against her chest.
“Your father protected you from prison. I protected you from learning what he planned.”
Thomas Whitmore appeared on the factory screens and called Helen an extortionist living on settlement money.
Helen looked toward the workers.
“I cleaned offices at night after the disaster. Comfortable was the word rich men used because poverty sounded inconvenient.”
She admitted accepting money to seal Claire’s juvenile file, but said it funded years of investigation.
The tape showed Thomas Bennett bringing Claire into the control room and positioning her near the switches.
Before the crucial moment, another person entered and changed the colored labels.
The image ended before the face appeared.
Claire whispered, “Why would Dad risk me?”
Helen answered:

“Plant Three was never meant to explode. It was meant to frighten the board—and you were the witness he believed nobody would prosecute.”
Then she inserted the second tape.
