Chapter 38 - THE FILE HER MOTHER BURIED.

Claire remembered no foundation, settlement or reason her mother would hide one.

Margaret tried to remove the file.

“Some records protect children from memories they cannot survive.”

Claire pulled it back.

“That sentence has protected every powerful adult in this family.”

The file showed Claire had been present at Plant Three on the day twelve workers died. She was sixteen, visiting Thomas Bennett during a school break.

Official reports said no minors witnessed the disaster.

Workers who lost relatives stared at her differently.

Evelyn Price’s father had died inside the plant.

“You were there?” she asked.

Claire answered honestly.

“I do not remember enough to deserve your trust.”

A photograph showed teenage Claire in a red safety helmet beside a control panel. Behind her, Thomas Whitmore carried a red component away from the damaged line.

Then Adrian opened the incident log.

Minutes before the explosion, someone using Claire’s visitor badge entered the emergency control room.
