Chapter 32 - THE DEBT BURIED BENEATH THE PATENTS.
The agreement revealed a deliberate trap. If employees accepted the factories, they would also inherit decades of injury claims, environmental penalties and wrongful-death exposure from Plant Three.
Thomas called it legal continuity.
Claire called it punishment.
“You stole their wages when the company needed saving. Now you offer ownership only if they accept every crime committed above them.”
Arthur admitted signing the agreement nineteen years earlier.
“I believed separating the patents would keep the company alive.”
Rosa answered, “It kept your family rich and left workers responsible for the graves.”
Thomas offered Claire a compromise: preserve Whitmore Holdings, keep him as trustee and abandon the employee breakup.
“All you must surrender,” he said, “is the illusion that workers can govern themselves.”
Claire refused.
Then the Newark manager called.

A foreclosure order had been attached to the gate. Unless the plant paid a patent penalty by six the next morning, federal marshals would seize its machinery.
Someone had scheduled the first collapse before the workers could vote.
