Claire stared at the screen.

Margaret whispered, “That is my father, Leonard Hayes.”

Leonard had been legal counsel for Whitmore Industrial and chairman of the safety committee. He told teenage Claire, “Press green when your father gives the signal.”

Thomas Bennett entered seconds later, saw the altered labels and did not correct them.

Instead, he looked directly at the hidden camera.

“He knew,” Claire said.

Helen’s voice broke.

“Your father believed a brief shutdown would force the board to reveal the defective system. Leonard wanted something worse.”
